You Need a Boating Safety Certificatexxxxx

July 8, 2024

Brianna's Law was adopted in 2019 by NY State.

Brianna's Law is named after Brianna Lieneck, an 11-year-old Long Island girl who was killed in a 2005 boating accident.

The law requires all operators of motorized vessels to acquire a Boating Safety Certificate by successfully completing a class. Classes can be taken online or in person. The certificate must be physically present on the vessel if inspected by the police, which does happen on Copake Lake, especially during high use periods.

In addition to motorboats and PWCs/jetskis, "motorized vessel" means any vessel with a motor, including dinghies with trolling motors (!!!).

The law has been phasing in over several years, exempting groups of people by age. Starting Jan 1 2025, everyone will be required to be certified.

Information, including course availability, can be found here and here.

Once you acquire the certificate, you can have the DMV issue a drivers license with a cool anchor icon which serves as evidence of your certification in place of the certificate, as well as impressing your friends.
