Copake Lake: Safety Notesxxxxx
Safety – A Collaborative Goal
In an effort to increase safety on the lake the CLCS education and safety committee continues to partner with the Columbia County Sheriff. Together, we would like to remind everyone that:
From 8pm to 9am there is a town ordinance regarding speed restrictions on the lake to not exceed 6mph
All buoys must be permitted. All permitted buoys must be placed in compliance with the stipulations indicated on the permit. Unpermitted buoys and non-compliant permitted buoys are a navigational hazard and will be removed. The sheriff will be providing a grace period to have all unpermitted buoys removed.
All motorized boat operators, INCLUDING personal watercraft, MUST have a NYS Boating Safety Certificate which requires taking an approved safety course. In 2024, all operators of motorized vessels born on or after January 1, 1978 need to carry a safe boating certificate while operating. Starting January 1, 2025, a safety certificate will be required of all operators, regardless of age.

Boaters are required by NYS law to follow boating regulations as per NYS rules and regulations. Safety is our shared responsibility. We look forward to a fun and safe summer
