Copake Lake will be treated with copper sulfate this Friday morning, June 19th, to clear up the clumps of green filamentous algae that have been noticed around the lake. While the algae is unsightly, keep in mind that filamentous algae is harmless. If you wish to remove it from your lakefront area, simply rake it up and deposit it on the shore.
The copper sulfate treatment will require swimmers to avoid the treated areas from mid-morning on Friday for 24 hours, until Saturday mid-morning. Pet owners should also avoid having dogs and other animals drink from the lake during this period. There will be posters put up around the lake to notify residents and lake users on the day the treatment is applied. Keep in mind that our contractors are working under COVID-19 protocols, so please avoid approaching treatment equipment when it is on the lake.
